Northwest pilots bear the brunt now
October 25th, 2009 - 6:09 pm ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )Minneapolis, Oct 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Wayward pilots who sped away 240 kms past their destination are facing the brunt of their action now. A full-fledged investigation is on, that includes the FBI who is trying to decipher what the crew was up to at 11,000 meters, when they flew past their destination.
A report released yesterday revealed that the pilots passed breath tests, showing they had not consumed alcohol.
The three-page report, released by the police doesn’t shed any new light on this happening, it however says that the pilots “were cooperative, apologetic and appreciative”and both voluntarily submitted to alcohol-breath tests. The tests found no evidence that the pilots were drinking.
The two pilots, Timothy Cheneyand Richard Cole told investigators they were having a heated discussion about airline policy before they realized that the flight from San Diego to Minneapolis had overshot the airport by some 240 kms.
“I know there’s a lot of discussion, there’s a lot of misinformation going on,” Cole told KGW on Friday.“Nobody was asleep in the cockpit.”
When the aircraft overshot the airport then the air traffic controller was very worried. A possible terrorist attack was also foremost in everybody’s mind. So even after contact was re-established, air-traffic controllers asked the crew to prove who they were by executing turns.
”Controllers have a heightened sense of vigilance when we’re not able to talk to an aircraft. That’s the reality post-9/11,” said Doug Church, a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, referring to the tragic September 11, 2001, when terrorists captured four aircraft and crashed into various buildings, including the Twin Towers and a field in the United States.
