Northern Peru Hit By Major 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake

May 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A very strong earthquake which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale has hit Northern Peru. The quake was said to be 125 kilometers below the ground’s surface, and occurred 130 kilometers to the north/northwest of Moyobamba, Peru, and about 750 km north of the capital of Peru, which is Lima at 11:15pm local time.

The fault on which this earthquake occurred is said to be one of the most active faults in the world when it comes to seismic activity. It is called “The Pacific Rim” and stretches into Chile, and Ecuador and is to blame for many major earthquakes in quite a few countries in past episodes.

Thankfully, there has not yet been reports of major injuries nor damage to property as of yet in this quake. The mines which are such an important part of the economy of Peru were also said to have remained undamaged.
