SEOUL (BNO NEWS) — North Korean leader Kim Jong-il paid an unofficial visit to China from Monday to Friday, the two governments confirmed on Friday. Media reports had earlier indicated that Kim Jong-il had traveled to China by train.

Kim Jong-il paid the visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao, according to KCNA, North Korea’s official news agency. Hu welcomed Kim Jong-il on behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Chinese government, and its people.

Hu also thanked the North Korean leader for his condolences offered after a deadly 7.1-magnitude earthquake in northwest China on April 14. The devastating left at least 2,220 people dead and more than 12,000 injured. Seventy people remain missing.

During Kim’s visit to Beijing, China state media reported, Hu hosted a welcoming banquet in honor of Kim Jong-il and accompanied him during a visit to a biological company.

Kim said that North Korea remains unchanged in sticking to denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, according to a report carried by China’s state-run Xinhua newswire service.

Hu and Kim further exchanged views on the international situation, the situation in Northeast Asia and the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Kim said North Korea will work with China to create favorable conditions for restarting the six-party talks.

Besides Kim’s meeting with Hu, he also met with top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.
