RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA (BNO NEWS) – Governor Beverly Perdue cautioned North Carolina residents to be on alert for severe weather that may include tornadoes and thunderstorms for the week of February 28 – March 6, the Office of the Governor announced on Friday.

The Governor declared a Severe Weather Awareness Week in North Carolina and addressed some cautions for residents. The security measures include having safety plans at home, work, or school in order to act quickly when a tornado alert is issued.

“We never know when or where a tornado will strike. You may only have a few minutes warning. That is why it is so critical to have emergency plans in place,” said Gov. Perdue

The National Weather Service issued 70 tornado warnings and recorded 33 tornadoes in North Carolina in 2009. Four of those tornadoes had winds of more than 110 mph and caused at least $3 million in damages.

Tornadoes usually form during heavy thunderstorms when warm, moist air collides with cold air. These storms can also produce large hail and strong winds. Damaging straight line winds are equally as dangerous.
