WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — A North Carolina-based Marine from Florida was killed in an attack in southern Afghanistan last week, the U.S. Department of Defense announced on Monday.

Lance Corporal Philip P. Clark, 19, of Gainesville, Florida died last Tuesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

It was not exactly clear how Clark had been killed, but the NATO-led ISAF alliance said two U.S. service members were killed in southern Afghanistan that day. They died in two separate incidents: an improvised explosive device (IED) attack and a small-arms attack. Clark is believed to be one of them.

Clark was the 128th U.S. service member to have been killed in Afghanistan this year, according to a BNO News count based on official data. In total, 205 coalition service members have been killed so far this year.

Also on Monday, a coalition service member in southern Afghanistan was killed as a result of an improvised explosive device attack. His or her nationality has not yet been released.
