chomsky Massachusetts, May 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The noted linguist and the Jewish American professor Noam Chomsky has been barred from coming into Israel. He was supposed to go to Israel in connection with a lecture at a university near Ramallah, West Bank. But he was denied entry by Israel’s Interior Ministry.

A spokesperson with the Interior Ministry – Sabine Haddad said that they were collaborating with other officials to determine if Noam should be allowed into the country or not. Sabine said that if the coordinator thinks that he is not a threat to the country, then “we will grant him entry” to lecture at Bir Zeit University. Sabine also added that there has been a misunderstanding, due to which he was not allowed to enter the country. The spokesperson clearly denied that Noam was not allowed to enter the country, as he had been blacklisted.

Noam, who is a Jewish professor of linguistics and philosophy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also found it very hard to believe that he could be denied entry, even in these modern times. He said that, “I find it hard to think of a similar case, in which entry to a person is denied because he is not lecturing in Tel Aviv. Perhaps only in Stalinist regimes.”
