PITTSBURGH (THAINDIAN NEWS) — Police in Pittsburgh briefly feared that an explosive device had been placed near the course of the PIttsburgh Marathon on Sunday.

Police initially told Fox News that a device was confirmed to be an explosive device, but officials later told Fox News and NBC News that it was not an actual explosive device. It was not immediately clear what caused the confusion.

The device was found in a small microwave oven on the sidewalk of the course after leaders had finished the course. Pittsburgh Police Lt. Kevin Kraus told Fox News that several blocks were cordoned off near the original finish line for the marathon and half-marathon.

Police tried to reroute the race, Fox News reported, but eventually the race was delayed for only 10 minutes.

A robot was used to disable the device, and an all-clear was given shortly before 11 a.m. local time.

The bomb scare came only hours after a failed car bomb attack on Times Square in New York City. No one was injured in the failed attack, which is being described as an ‘act of terrorism’ by Governor Paterson.
