New Jersey, Oct 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Howard Unruh, the mass murderer of a shooting rampage in Camden, New Jersey died on Monday. He died in a New Jersey prison hospital. He was a World War II veteran.

Howard started the rampage on September 6th 1949. He was dead sure that his neighbors and friends had been conspiring against him. He picked up his gun, and all the extra ammunition that he had and started shooting indiscriminately. He kept on shooting till he ran out of ammunition.

Unruh killed a cobbler and a neighbor’s family. He was a gay and had relationships with many men. He also thought that people used to ridicule him for his sexual orientation. So he took out his frustration in the form of a violent rampage.

In all 13 people were killed. Howard Unruh was found guilty of all the murders and was caught from his apartment but he was sent to a psychiatric facility for schizophrenic behavior. He never went to trial for his crime.

Ron Dale was only eight years old at the rampage time and was getting a haircut when the rampage began. He recounts that the courts consistently found Unruh mentally unfit to be tried for the carnage:

“People said that he was incompetent, but I don’t particularly like the fact that we paid an awful lot of money to keep this man in jail for all these years.”
 
Dale still lives in the neighborhood and has kept a scrapbook of events related to the case.

Howard Unruh spent the rest of his life in a hospital and had been ill for long.
