Nivea apologizes for ‘racist’ ad
August 19th, 2011 - 10:48 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLos Angeles, Aug 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Beauty care company Nivea has issued an apology for its ad that has been tagged racist. The “Look like you give a damn” ad has a picture of a black man holding a facial image of himself with bear and ready to throw it away. The picture is accompanied by the words “Re-civilize yourself” boldly written over the image. The ad has caused concerns that it is meant to insult the black race with several Facebook pages opened on the topic.
Nivea issued an explanation and an apology for the ad. The company wrote on its Facebook wall that, “Thank you for caring enough to give us your feedback about the recent ‘Re-civilized’ NIVEA FOR MEN ad. This ad was inappropriate and offensive. It was never our intention to offend anyone, and for this we are deeply sorry. This ad will never be used again. Diversity and equal opportunity are crucial values of our company.”
Curiously, a similar ad featuring a white man had another inscription. The ad showed a white man shot in a similar way like the black man. This time around, the image had the words, “Sin City isn’t an excuse to look like hell.”
It is feared that Nivea, which is a German owned company, will lose its support in the black community.
