Nine rescued after helicopter carrying 16 German tourists crashes in Russia’s Kamchatka

MOSCOW (BNO NEWS) — At least nine people were rescued after a helicopter carrying 19 passengers and crew crashed on a mountain in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday, Russian news agencies reported.

The MI-8 Hip helicopter carrying 16 tourist snowboarders and 3 crew members was found crashed on a mountain about 50 kilometers southwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry confirmed the tourists were German citizens. The aircraft, which was found covered in snow, may have been hit by an avalanche, according to the RIA-Novosti news agency.

The agency, while citing an emergency official, reported that nine people were rescued and sent to hospitals. It said two of the survivors are in a serious condition, while the others are in a ’satisfactory condition.’
