New Zealand rocked by an earthquake 7.4 on the Richter scale

New Zealand quake Christchurch, Sep 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) New Zealand has been rocked by an earthquake that measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. It happened in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

According to reports the earthquake struck about 19 miles northwest of Christchurch at about 4:35 am local time. It struck about 20 miles deep inside the earth, thus the drastic effects of the earthquake were reduced quite a bit. According to the GeoNet Data Center, it was a shallow earthquake.

According to the latest reports, there hasn’t been any major damage to the Christchurch Airport. So perhaps the flights schedule haven’t been affected drastically. However the aftershocks are continuing to be felt in the region. And most of the localities of Christchurch are bereft of electricity because of the earthquake. However till date, no casualties have been reported as of now. Since it was a shallow earthquake, so the damage to the buildings has also been contained.

According to the United States Geological Survey the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.2 on the Richter scale. After the earthquake, no tsunami warning was issued.

    Widespread damage to buildings. 2 people seriously injured. Water and sewerage affected. Power still out to much of city.
