New York subway workers launch a website for the subway rat menace
January 10th, 2012 - 9:54 pm ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )New York, Jan 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) New York subway workers have come up with a way to draw public attention to the rat menace that affects them. In an unprecedented move, the workers union has launched a website for travelers to post images of rats at the subway. They hope this will help in the long term to rid the subway of the rat problem.
Images of rats taken at the subway can be sent to the website ratfreesubways.com. All the pictures uploaded at the website will be ranked on the section called Rate My Rat. Currently, six pictures and videos have been uploaded at the site.
In a statement to promote the program, the Transport Workers Union indicated that, “Rats are proliferating in the New York City subways. Aggressive rats are bolder about coming onto the platforms, and have even been known to bite riders. They infest the refuse rooms where garbage is stored.”
The war against rat is a serious business in the United States. Currently 20 stations under the Metropolitan Transport Authority has been declared rat warzones where extreme measures are taken to eradicate the creatures. Nonetheless, TWU states that the measure is not enough to solve the bigger problem.
Rats are known to spread diseases like rabies and others.
