New Travel Warning issued for Kenya
March 17th, 2010 - 3:04 am ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) – The U.S. Department of State issued a travel warning Tuesday to the country of Kenya.
U.S. citizens in Kenya and those considering travel to Kenya should evaluate their personal security situation as continuing terrorism threats and violent crime rates have overwhelmed the country.
The U.S. Government has continued to receive indications of potential terrorist threats aimed at U.S., Western, and Kenyan interests in Kenya that could include suicide operations, bombings, kidnappings, and attacks on civil aviation and maritime vessels.
A portion of Kenya bordering Somalia and Ethiopia has been marked as “restricted without prior authorization” for purposes of travel by U.S. Government employees, contractors, grantees, and their dependents. U.S. Embassy security personnel also expanded the restricted area to include the Lamu district.
Violent and sometimes fatal criminal attacks, including armed carjackings, home invasions/burglaries and kidnappings can occur at any time and in any location, particularly in Nairobi. U.S. citizens in Kenya should be extremely careful particularly in public places visited by foreigners such as clubs, hotels, resorts, upscale shopping centers, restaurants, and places of worship. U.S. should also remain alert in residential areas, at schools, and at outdoor recreational events, and should avoid demonstrations and large crowds.
This Travel Warning replaces the one issued on July 24, 2009, highlighting continued security concerns in northeast Kenya near the Somali and Ethiopian borders.
Travelers should consult the Worldwide Caution for further information and details.
