Fort Lauderdale, Nov 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The United States Navy over the weekend unveiled its new destroyer at the Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The destroyer is named after a US marine who gave his life to save the lives of his colleagues.

Named, USS Jason Dunham, the destroyer ship was decorated with red, white and blue ribbons and flags during the commissioning of the ship. Thousands of people turned up for the occasion. The destroyer ship did cost $1 billion and it is a guided missile destroyer. It measures some 510 foot and it was built in Bath Maine. The destroyer will be stationed at Norfolk, Va.

Jason Dunham is seen as a hero in the United States. He was a Marine corporal and he laid his life down to save his colleagues some six years ago in Iraq. When his team came under attack after insurgents threw a grenade at them, Corporal Dunham did throw himself on the grenade resulting in his death. His action has been honored and naming of the ship after him is the latest honor for the late corporal.

America has lost several servicemen during its battle in both Afghanistan and Iraq. The country is still engaged in battle in Afghanistan but has greatly reduced its involvement in Iraq.
