Kolkata, India, Mar 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A small island along the Bay of Bengal which was a matter of dispute between India and Bangladesh, has almost completely vanished, if reports are to be believed. The main reasons for the disappearance of the tiny island is being attributed to the rising levels of sea water mainly owing to global warming.
It has been revealed that major parts of the New Moore Island, which was present at the confluence of the Ichhamati river and the Rai Mangal river, is nowhere to be found as it has submerged below the waves, the prime causes of which are stated to be elevating seas levels as well as erosion. The finding that most portions of the island has plunged under the Bay of Bengal has been confirmed by oceanographer Sugata Hazra, who works at the School of Oceanographic Studies at Kolkata based Jadavpur University. He has revealed that after evaluating the satellite images and sea patrol data, any trace of the island has not been found. The oceanographer further divulged that after consulting local fisherman, it has been confirmed that the island has vanished except being visible for brief period of time during low tides.
The New Moore Island, which was 3 kilometers wide and 3.5 kilometers in length, had been a bone of contention between India and Bangladesh with both the countries claiming that it belonged to their territory. However, it seems climate played its part in resolving the disagreement between the two countries, with the island getting swallowed by the Bay of Bengal, thus bringing an end to the decades old dispute.
