coupOregon, Dec.29, (THAINDIAN NEWS) An elderly couple had to spend three snowy days in a forest in eastern Oregon, after the global positioning system of their SUV failed to give them the right direction. Fortunately, the couple were rescued after a sheriff’s deputy tracked a signal through the GPS-enabled cell phone that the couple were carrying.

Reportedly, 65 year old John Rhodes was returning home with his wife Starry Bush-Rhodes when they sought the help of the navigation system of their Toyota Sequoia car. The couple followed the instruction given by the GPS and found themselves stuck at Winema-Fremont National Forest. Fortunately, the couple had additional food, water and warm clothes which enabled them to survive through the three difficult days.

Tim Evinger, Klamath County Sheriff later revealed that the Nevada couple, who were stranded from Christmas day onwards, were rescued on Sunday from the forest near Silver Lake town after their vehicle was taken out of the snow. The sheriff also added that while the couple were on their way home in Reno, Nevada, they took a right turn on the Forest Service Road 28 and traveled for almost 56 kilometers before being stuck in the heavy snow. Thankfully as the weather improved a bit on Sunday, it resulted in their cell phone receiving a signal that could be nabbed by the authorities.

The couple, who have now safely reached their home, added later that this was a Christmas that they would surely not forget in this lifetime. Meanwhile, the incident has raised serious doubts about whether the GPS instructions can be blindly followed, given the harrowing experience that the couple had to go through.

I have been using GPS navigation since they came out and some versions can be tricky. You have to pay attention to what you are actually programming into it.
Your default settings can send you on a wild goose chase. GPS requires some technical knowledge and skill.
I have been GPS-lost twice in the last 10 years.
