Nearly two dozen seriously injured in Staten Island, NY ferry crash
May 8th, 2010 - 10:41 pm ICT by BNO NewsNEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) — Nearly 40 people were injured after the Staten Island Ferry crashed into a terminal on Saturday morning, emergency officials said.
The first call came in at 9.25 a.m. EDT after the ferry crashed into terminal 5 at the St. George Ferry Terminal, according to the New York City Fire Department. Numerous emergency services were on the scene.
A spokesman for the New York City Fire Department said 18 people sustained serious injuries, while 20 others sustained minor injuries. Earlier, the New York City Fire Department and a spokesman for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said a total of 60 people had been injured, but officials later revised that figure down.
More than 250 passengers were on board the MV Andrew J. Barberi when the accident happened. The same ferry was involved in a similar accident in October 2003, when the ship crashed into a terminal at the St. George Ferry Terminal. That accident killed 11 people and injured 71 others.
“It appears the ferry experienced a hard landing,” a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said. Officials said the scene was under control several hours after the accident.
The New York City Office of Emergency Management advised people to expect delays at the St. George Ferry Terminal. “Emergency personnel are responding to a Staten Island docking incident,” the department said in a notification sent out to residents.
