Nearly 30 injured after 7-alarm breaks out in Chinatown, New York

NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) — A massive 7-alarm fire broke out in the Chinatown neighborhood of New York City on late Sunday, authorities said, injuring dozens of people.

Rescue crews first responded to the scene after a 911 call at 10.14 p.m. EDT, a New York Fire Department official said from the scene by telephone. He said the first crew arrived at the scene at 10.16 p.m.

The fire broke out at 285 Grand Street, a six-story building which was used for both commercial and residential means. It later spread to a second building, but was declared under control at 2.15 a.m. local time.

Two elderly civilians were taken to hospital in critical condition, while a third who inhaled smoke was hospitalized with minor injuries. An EMS worker and 24 firefighters were also hospitalized with other minor injuries, including one who had burns to his hands.

More than 250 firefighters and 60 fire trucks were battling the blaze.
