WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — A North Carolina based Marine from Wyoming was shot dead in southern Afghanistan last Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Defense and the United States Marine Corps said on Monday.

Lance Cpl. Jacob A. Ross, 20, of Gillette, Wyoming, was killed as a result of a hostile incident while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, the U.S. Marine Corps said in a statement. He was an assaultman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Although it is Marine Corps policy to not release details on the cause of death, the NATO-led ISAF alliance said Ross died as a result of a small-arms attack.

Ross was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in October 2009. His awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal.

Ross, who is survived by his wife, was the 80th U.S. service member to have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to a BNO News count based on official figures. In total, 125 coalition service members have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

Earlier on Monday, a coalition service member died as a result of an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in southern Afghanistan. His identity was not immediately released.
