Nov 15, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The US Navy is all set to welcome yet another new Arleigh Burke Class Aegis Guided Missile Destroyer, the USS Jason Dunham in their fleet. It was commissioned today in Port Everglades and thereby got the full status of a ship that belongs to the Unites States Navy.
The ship has been named after Marine Corps Corporal Jason Dunham, who left his last breathe about six years ago in Iraq, at the tender age of 22, on April 14, 2004. He threw himself into the grenade, in order to save the life of the other members of his crew. USS Jason Dunham has been so named to pay a tribute to the U.S. navy hero. This ship was inaugurated by Deb Dunham, ship sponsor and mother of Marine Corps Corporal Jason Dunham, as she asked everyone to man the ship and bring it to life. His father Dan Dunham, set the first watch while passing the long glass to LTJG Andrew Gray. This watch would continue to serve the ship through out the period of its service to the nation and safeguard the ship and it crew. General James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps addressed the couple who has been through the worst phase of their life by sacrificing their son. He said that this ship will pay a tribute to Jason Dunham and take the legacy of the American Navy forward.
This new ship will be commanded by Commander Scott Sciretta and Secretary of the Navy, Robert Work, placed the USS Jason Dunham into service. This ship is 510 feet long and is run by three Rolls Royce 3000kW Gas Turbine Generators and four Marine Gas Turbine Engines. The ship will officially start serving the United States from today.
