NATO air strike accidentally kills four Afghan soldiers
December 17th, 2010 - 2:59 am ICT by BNO NewsKABUL (BNO NEWS) — An air strike by international forces in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday killed at least four Afghan soldiers, according to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Thursday.
ISAF said a joint incident assessment team has launched an investigation into the air strike, which was carried out in Helmand Province on Wednesday. “There are reports four Afghan National Army soldiers were killed during an ISAF air strike,” a statement from the alliance said.
ISAF said the incident occurred after a combined Afghan and ISAF patrol came under small arms fire from insurgents. “The patrol called for a close air support mission in which a coalition aircraft positively identified the insurgent firing position and conducted an air strike,” it said.
Other details were not immediately available but the incident happened only a week after another NATO air strike killed two Afghan soldiers and wounded several others in the country’s south.
