Most-played Christmas song of century is ‘Fairytale’ by the Pogues

London, Dec 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Britain has named Fairytale of New York by the Pogues as the most played Christmas song of the century. Ironically, the song has never topped any singles chart but it has been played consistently each Christmas since 2000.

The song was performed by Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl who died in Mexico in 2000. The song’s popularity peaks during the Christmas festivities. It has been in the Christmas Top 20 in seven Christmas’ since 2000.

The royalties from the song are shared with Kirsty’s family using their part to unravel what happened on that fateful day when she died in a freak accident. On the 18th of December 2000, Kirsty along with her husband and children were in a boat when a speed boat crashed into them. She was killed instantly and the family has challenged the official account of what happened.

The boat that crashed into Kirsty’s boat is owned by Mexican supermarket millionaire Guillermo González Nova but officials say he was not behind the controls when the accident. Rather his employee José Cen Yam claimed responsibility and was jailed for it.

The family insists Yam was paid to take put himself up for the blame.
