Mosquito Eating Fish From Mississippi Being Sent To Haiti
September 11th, 2010 - 7:32 pm ICT by Pen Men At WorkSeptember 11, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Almost 2000 mosquito eating fishes from Mississippi will be traveling to Haiti in order to liberate the nation from the minute insect. This is expected to serve as a part of an earthquake relief project organized by the International humanitarian aid group known as Operation Blessing International or OBI in short.
The fish is tiny in size and known as Gambusia. They are known to eat mosquitoes, their eggs as well as the larvae and can eat more than their body weight at a time. They have, in fact, been used extensively as an eco-friendly means of getting rid of mosquitoes which spread a number of diseases. Several countries around the world have also utilized the Gambusia successfully.
The OBI has been credited by the city of New Orleans for successfully averting the West Nile virus by artificially increasing the tiny fishes in all the stagnant ponds in and around the city.
The island of Haiti is known for Malaria epidemics. It is the last area of the western world with unconquered Malaria now. OBI has now taken up the challenge of destroying mosquitoes from the nation by adopting a special project called, ‘Teach A Nation To Fish’. The project will serve three definite purposes. It will be actively involved in stocking the infested waters of Haiti with the tiny fish; running an enterprise dedicated to farming the Tilapia fish as well as increasing the stock of food fish in the various lakes and reservoirs across the nation.
The Gambusia meant for Haiti is currently being raised in Tchula by the Thompson Fish Hatchery.
