May 10, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The campaign to construct a mosque two blocks away from the devastated Ground Zero has set in motion a poignant discussion among the inhabitants of the area and among the nearest and dearest of the fatalities of the terrorist monstrosities on 9/11.
The Cordoba House project has elucidated a 15-story community center close to Ground Zero that will consist of a mosque, performance art center, gymnasium, swimming pool and other communal areas.
The project is a cooperative endeavor between the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative, both of which function to enhance relations with the adherents of the religion.
The two groups proposed their visualization to a component of the Community Board of lower Manhattan on Wednesday night.
Ro Sheffe, a board member who was present at the meeting, has divulged that the project did not require the acquirement of the board’s endorsement.
The 12 members, who were at the meeting, cast their votes collectively to endorse the project. Community board members are chosen by the borough president and function as advice-givers to the borough president and the mayor’s office.
Daisy Khan, executive director of the Muslim society, portrayed her visualization of a center headed by Muslims, but assisting the community all together.
Daisy Khan articulated that the community center will possess a genuine community ambiance. The center would be constructed to commemorate the pluralism and multiracial personality of America, as well as of the Islamic faith. Khan expounded that it will also operate as a key vehicle for strengthening the soundless tone of the majority of the American Muslims, who, in any case, have nothing to do with terrorist philosophies. This community center will counteract the fanatic thrust.
Khan divulged that the necessity of the center is twofold. It will assist the requirements of the mounting Muslim community.
Herbert Ouida, whose son was liquidated in the 9/11 outrage, has endorsed the project as a means to link the religious partition.
Ouida mentioned that she acknowledges the fury, the sullenness and odium of the kith and kin of the victims of 9/11. However, these attributes only produce more revulsion. Herbert declared that a gigantic part of the globe has the Islamic faith. To utter that any person, who adheres to the Islamic religion, is a radical is disgustingly racist.
Others condemned the notion of manufacturing a mosque so close to where their relatives breathed their last breath.
Lower Manhattan should be transformed into a memorial for the guiltless individuals, who expired there. This was explicated by Michael Valentin, a retired city police officer, who functioned at Ground Zero. He has stated that the construction of a mosque in this area is heartbreaking and he sympathizes with the families who have to tolerate this. The mosque should not be positioned in this area.
Others such as Barry Zelman have angrily articulated that the position of the mosque will be an excruciating souvenir.
He has, with fieriness, vocalized that the 9/11 monsters did this in the name of Islam. He has revealed that Ground Zero is a sacrosanct ground where the innocent people passed away and where his brother was liquidated. Zelman has divulged that, to be in the shade of that religion is just duplicitous and profane.
