October 28, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): A recent survey has revealed that the parents in England and Wales are most likely to name their newborn Mohammed than anywhere else in the world. The survey also shows that Oliver has finally managed to overtake Jack after a long 14 years. As many as 7,515 boys were named after the Islamic prophet in the past couple of years. On the other hand Oliver came a distant second at 7,364.

Even without counting the large number of variant spelling of Mohammed it has been found that Mohammed continues to be the most popular name in West Midlands. On the other hand in London Mohammed comes a distant fourth in the popularity charts.

Dr. Justin Gest, an academic at the Harvard University exclaimed that the survey goes on to depict Britain’s diversity. The office of National Statistics has revealed that there are 3,300 boys named Mohammed, 2,162 are called Muhammad, 1073 Mohammads and 980 are called muhammed, Mohamed, Mohamad, Muhamed or Mohammod.

Experts believe that this new development goes on to show the popularity of this name among the British Muslims. Muslims believe that Mohammed is the epitome of excellence and they try to incorporate his values and imbibe his beliefs in real life. The survey revealed that Olivia continues to be the most popular name among baby girls.

While some of the names are on the rise some others have fallen quite a few places over the years. Names like Keira, Alisha and Libby fell by quite a few notches. On the other hand very few boys were named Cameroon or Gordon by their parents these days.
