Moderate earthquake strikes Indonesia’s Palau region, no reports of damage

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake struck Indonesia’s Palau region on Saturday morning, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck at about 11.53 a.m. local time and was centered about 361 kilometers (224 miles) north-northwest of Manokwari, a city in the country’s West Papua province at the western end of New Guinea, according to the U.S. Geological Agency. It struck about 35.9 kilometers (22.3 miles) deep.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center initially reported the earthquake as having a 6.2 magnitude.

No tsunami warnings were issued following the earthquake, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
