Moderate earthquake shakes southwestern Iran

DEZFUL, IRAN (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake shook southwestern Iran on Saturday, seismologists said. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties.

The 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck just before midnight, around 11.53 p.m. local time, and was located about 15 miles north of Dezful, a city with a population of over 250,000 in southwestern Iran.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties following the earthquake.

In November 2009, a small 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, injuring more than 700 people.
