Moderate earthquake rocks Spain, at least 7 dead

MADRID (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake struck southeastern Spain on early Wednesday evening, seismologists said, killing at least seven people.

The 5.2-magnitude earthquake at 6.47 p.m. local time (1647 GMT) was centered about 6 kilometers southwest of Lorca, a small town in the autonomous community of Murcia. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

The Madrid-based ABC newspaper said at least seven people were killed after a number of buildings had collapsed, adding that others were injured. Local television stations showed debris scattered on streets.
