Moderate earthquake hits offshore northern California
August 16th, 2010 - 7:51 pm ICT by BNO NewsEUREKA, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake struck offshore northern California on early Monday morning, seismologists said, but there were no reports of damage or casualties.
The 4.5-magnitude earthquake at 5.05 a.m. local time (1205 GMT) was centered about 55 miles (85 kilometers) west of Eureka, a city in Humboldt County. It struck approximately 4.6 miles (7.4 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the California Integrated Seismic Network.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated that approximately 200 people likely perceived weak shaking as a result of the earthquake, but said damage was not expected.
