Moderate but deep earthquake hits the Fiji region, no threat
March 16th, 2010 - 7:55 pm ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )LAKEBA, FIJI (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake struck the Fiji region on early Wednesday, seismologists said, but causing no threat to land.
The 5.4-magnitude earthquake at 12.25 a.m. local time was centered about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Fiji’s Lakeba Island. It struck about 553 kilometers deep (343.6 miles), making it an extremely deep earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake was initially reported as having a 5.9-magnitude. Because of the depth and the location of the earthquake, no damage is expected.
