Moderate 5.7-magnitude earthquake hits central Chile

SANTIAGO (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake shook Chile’s capital on Friday afternoon, more than two months after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the country’s Maule Region, seismologists said.

The moderate 5.7-magnitude earthquake at 02:52 p.m. was felt widely throughout the capital, Santiago, witnesses told BNO News.

The earthquake was centered about 113 kilometers (70 miles) north of Talca. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Moderate shaking was observed in the country’s Valparaíso, O’Higgins, Maule and Biobio regions, according to the National Emergency Office.

It said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
