Jefferson City, April 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Missouri Senate on Thursday passed a bill that would restrict late abortion in the state. Current state laws allow a woman to have an aborting at an advanced stage of her pregnancy to “preserve the life or health of the woman.”

The Senate-passed bill which would have to pass in another vote restricts late abortion to only women whose lives have been endangered by the pregnancy. Another physician would also have to certify that indeed the pregnancy would harm the mother if it is not aborted.

The new bill only allows abortion after it has been determined by that the mother’s life is endangered by a “physical disorder, physical illness or physical injury.”

Analysts say the new law would prevent women from having abortion out of convenience. An abortion rights group in the state, NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri, wrote on its website that the new measure would only put “burdensome requirements” on those who want to have abortions.

Democratic Governor Jay Nixon has not indicated whether he would sign the new measure if the House passes it. Nixon though is abortion-bias but vetoing the bill might not be an option because the Republican-dominated Senate and House could override it.
