Mississippi school prom canceled after a lesbian date request
March 12th, 2010 - 1:34 am ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( 1 comment )Jackson, Mar 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A school in Mississippi has decided to cancel the school as a lesbian student wanted to come dressed as a guy (by wearing a tuxedo) and also wanted to bring her girlfriend. The district policy of the Itawamba County School says that the dates of the senior prom should be of the opposite sex. However the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi has stepped in on this issue, and they want that the district ought to change the policy, so that it is in tune with the changing times. They also want that the 18-year-old Constance McMillen should be allowed to bring her lesbian girlfriend to the prom. The prom was scheduled to be held on the 2nd of April.
“It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors,” the district officials said in the statement. “However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students.”
Even though the officials asked them to change the policies, the school board met, and decided that they wouldn’t take things lying down, and they instead canceled the prom itself. They attributed the cancellation of the prom at the Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, “due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events.”

I grew up in the South. This is so typical of the narrowmindness that is still there. Let the kids have their dance, and if two girls are dancing together, so what. Girls have always danced together because there wasn’t enought boys who wanted to dance. Now that it has the official label of “Gay” they run for the hills. Homophobia!
