KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) – The location of the missing Afghan passenger aircraft, which was reported missing on Monday, was confirmed, NATO said Thursday.

Aircrews from the Afghan National Army Air Corps (ANAAC) and NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) located the wreckage of the civilian Antonov aircraft in Hindu Kush. The site is located at approximately 13,500 feet (4,100m) in Shakar Darah district, Kabul province.

Numerous missions were conducted in an effort to find the missing plane, which was operated by Pamir Airways and was carrying 44 people. The ANAAC crews, flying C-27 fixed wing aircraft and Mi-17 helicopters worked constantly since the missing plane was reported, and even though the crash site was initially observed late Wednesday, it was confirmed Thursday.

ISAF support included Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance assets, fixed-wing manned and unmanned aircraft and several helicopters. Afghan authorities, supported by their ISAF partners, are already planning a way ahead regarding recovery operations based on the elevation and rugged terrain.
