san-franciscoJan 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) An official with the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a mild, earthquake of 4.1-magnitude took place at 4:10 p.m. on Friday that was felt mildly but broadly across the Bay Area. Nearly 100 Santa Cruz County residents logged on to the “Did you feel it” Web page of USGS to put down their views. Most of the people reported the intensity of the earthquake to be “weak to light shaking,” according to Leslie Gordon, a spokeswoman of USGS. The earthquake tremors originated on Friday in a locked-up area of rocks deep underground close to the Calaveras Fault in a secluded oak-studded landscape, 13 miles southeast of San Jose’s City Hall.

The USGS reported that the tremors took place at a depth of 4.4 miles. People residing in San Francisco and the East bay reported that they felt the quake. Petra Albrecht, a coroner investigator for the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office reported that everything in the office just ’shook and jiggled’. An employee of the Reid-Hillview Airport, said that operations were continuing there as usual there. This is the closest airport to the epicenter of the earthquake. He also said that the tremors of the earthquake was felt, but there has been no damage caused to aircrafts or buildings. San Jose Fire Department official Randy Christopher said that the earthquake triggered a few false alarms. There was also a certain caller who reported gas in his building.

This particular earthquake is one of USGS’s 2011 list of “significant earthquakes” after the 7.1 magnitude ‘quake that hit Chile and the 7.0 magnitude ‘quake which hit Argentina a few days back. A Pacifica Police Department spokeswoman said that they attended a few calls from people, to confirm what they felt about the earthquake. However, there were no reports of damage.
