Feb 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The time has come to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The gay community can now serve openly in the nation’s defense. Officials declared on Tuesday that members in defense should not be forced to ” lie about who they are.” However, Defense Secretary Robert Gates as well as Joint Chief’s Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen said that they should study for a year the impact before the controversial policy is withdrawn by Congress. Admiral Mike Mullen said there were practical problems in repealing the policy where members had to conceal their sexual orientation if they were homosexual. However, he assured that the military will be able to handle it. Admiral Mike Mullen further added that it did not matter how he personally looked into the situation, but he could not do away with the social system where people are forced to lie about who they are for defending “fellow citizens.”
According to reports, President Barack Obama had requested to repeal the ban on gay community last week. The president said that this year he would be working with Congress and military to finally repeal the law which denied gay Americans the right to serve the nation which they love so much. Depriving the gay community from this right would not be right, he added.
Defense secretary Robert Gates gave one year’s policy review. He said the concern should be how they can best prepare for the change that is going to take place. He added that he received orders from the commander-in chief and is going to carry out what is being said.
