MIDDLE PORT, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – Officers arrested a teenager Thursday in Middle port, New York for driving while under the influence of drugs with a minor in the car, police said on Sunday.

Curtis J. Stipp, 16, was arrested after he was pulled over by police officers for running a stop sign at an intersection. Stipp failed standardized field sobriety tests and was arrested for Driving While Ability Impaired with drugs.

A further investigation revealed that Stipp had recently taken unperscribed-prescription drugs and smoked marijuana before operating the vehicle he was in.

Stipp had two passengers at the time of the stop, one of whom was only 15 years old. Under New York’s new “Leandra’s Law,” that went into effect December 18th, 2009; having a passenger in a vehicle that is under the age of 16 while the operator is intoxicated by alcohol or has their ability impaired by drugs, raises the crime to a felony.

Stipp is to appear in the Town of Shelby Court on January 21 to answer the charges.
