April 14, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): In her first official solo voyage overseas, America’s first lady, Michelle Obama, arrived in Mexico City after journeying to the Caribbean country of Haiti that had been ravaged and vandalized by a gruesome earthquake recently. Michelle Obama was accompanied by the American vice-president’s wife, Jill Biden, in Haiti. By reason of security concerns, the trip was not made public until very late.
It is supposed that both, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, had desired to voyage to Haiti for some time. But they wished to steer clear of interfering with the continuing compassionate labors. They had a meeting with the Haitian President, Rene Preval, and his wife, Elisabeth Delatour Preval, in addition to visiting a school.
When Michelle Obama conversed with the workers at the camps, the crowds broke into ovation at numerous points and expressed gratitude to Michelle Obama for her commitment to Haitian rejuvenation. Haitian UN employee, Christine Canal, mentioned that it was a great show of support and that she desires that the friendliness will convert into something tangible for Haiti.
The earthquake in Haiti slaughtered over 300,000 people and left more than a million dispossessed. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden flew by helicopter to the presidential palace, which was dented as were so many other governmental buildings by the ferocious earthquake.
Obama and Biden are two of numerous prestigious visitors to Haiti in recent weeks. Former American presidents, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, actor Sean Penn and Colombian vocalist Shakira have traveled to Haiti in recent weeks. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and several Latin American heads of government have also been to Haiti since the January 12 quake.
