gownWashington, Mar 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The elegant white gown that First Lady Michelle Obama wore at the 2009 inaugural ball is grabbing a lot of attention lately as it is all set to go down in the pages of history. It is being reported that the First Lady would be gifting the white chiffon gown to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History on Tuesday.

In the museum, the lovely looking one shouldered gown would be a part of the First Ladies Collection that is scheduled to open on Wednesday. The dress worn by Michelle Obama would be displayed in the new gallery of the museum which is dedicated to the first ladies of the nation and would include a variety of exhibits associated with them. At the same time, it has also been revealed that the Jason Wu designed gown, which the First Lady wore to around ten inaugural balls on the night of January 20, last year, will be part of the exhibition in which a total of 24 gowns donned by first ladies would be displayed, which would also include a total of twelve inaugural dresses. Meanwhile, Michelle Obama would be formally donating her gown to the museum in a ceremony that would be held on Tuesday.

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s tradition to collect the gowns worn by first ladies dates way back to 1912 with the museum asking the wives of the presidents to contribute something that represents them. Since then, the first ladies have almost made it a tradition to gift their inaugural dresses to the museum although it is not mandatory.
