Michelle Obama pays a surprise visit to Haiti

Port-Au-Prince, Apr 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The US First Lady Michelle Obama paid a surprise visit to the earthquake ravaged Haiti. Michelle and the wife of Vice President Joe Biden – Jill Biden, toured the capital of Haiti, in a helicopter. After the tour they landed at the National Palace, where they also met the Haitian President Rene Preval. Both of them even met numerous students whose lives have been turned topsy-turvy by the earthquake. They even took a walking tour of the temporary shelter arrangements, that provide shelter to many families, which have been displaced by the earthquake.
US First Lady Michelle Obama later said to the media that, “It’s powerful. The devastation is definitely powerful. It was important for Jill and I to come now because we’re at the point where the relief efforts are under way, but the attention of the world starts to wane a bit. As we enter the rainy season and the hurricane season…the issues are just going to become more compounded.”
Pop star Shakira had also visited the earthquake-ravaged nation Haiti on Sunday, and she also promised that her charity would build a school there. She flew into Haiti on a private jet, and visited the site of her ‘Barefoot Haiti’ school too. There she also interacted with more than 100 children, who also entertained her by dancing to her songs.
