Sep 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Local authorities in Mexico are fearing that hundreds of people are dead after a landslide buried around three hundred houses as the occupants inside slept.

Ulises Ruiz, the Governor of the state of Oaxaca, shared with Televista television network how the landslide which came in the early morning hours had poured down on the homes after the flooding rains which fell on the Sierra Juarez area.

The landslide hit the town of Santa Maria de Tlahuitoltepec, burying around 300 homes. Between five hundred and one thousand people are feared dead.

The landslide followed days of rain, making the area hard for the rescuers to reach. They are being flown in from Mexico City, to the town located around 50 miles east of Oaxaca City. “There has been lots of rain, rivers have overflowed and we’re having a hard time reaching the area because there are landslides on the roads,” Ruiz stated.
