Mexican citizen sentenced to prison in Sioux City, IO for selling meth

SIOUX CITY, IOWA (BNO NEWS) – A Mexican national on Thursday was convicted in Sioux City, Iowa to over seven years in federal prison for possessing methamphetamines, prosecutors said on Monday.

Juan Garcia-Hernandez, 32, received his prison term after a November 9, 2009, guilty plea to one charge of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Information provided by the United States at the sentencing and change of plea hearings revealed that, during a traffic stop in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, Garcia-Hernandez, who had been handcuffed, opened the door of the patrol car in which he was seated and took off running.

After Garcia-Hernandez was caught, his vehicle was searched, and a bag containing 110 grams of 73 percent pure methamphetamine was found. Garcia –Hernandez later said he was aware they were drugs and he was delivering them for a friend. Garcia-Hernandez was in the United States illegally at the time.

Garcia-Hernandez was sentenced in the United States District Court in Cedar Rapids to 87 months imprisonment. Garcia-Hernandez must also serve a four-year term of supervised release after prison. There is no parole in the federal system.

Garcia-Hernandez is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

This case is the result of an investigation by the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Mason City Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
