earthMexicali, Apr 5, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Mexicali was hit by an earthquake on Sunday, Apr 4, at around 3:40 in the afternoon. The latest in a series of earthquakes that have been striking this part of the world lately, the earthquake in Mexicali was not, thankfully, of that great a magnitude and thus, no major damage was reported immediately. However, later on, it was reported that at least one person had died, and some damage of considerable measure had been recorded in some parts where the earthquake had struck. The official count at present stands there, but the officials are still gathering information about the extent of damage and loss of lives.

The earthquake occurred in the border between California and Mexico, and read 7.5 in the Richter Scale. Its epicenter lay in an area about 108 miles east to Tijuana. It originated about ten miles deep. Information about the duration of the earthquake varies a bit, and it seems to have lasted for about 35 to 55 seconds, according to the reports provided by one of the seismologists at the Cal Tech, Lucy Jones.

She further reported that an aftershock is most likely to occur in the region in the days to come, but assured that the temblor would not be this high in magnitude, and that it would possibly be of about an intensity of 6.0. A tsunami warning has not been issued after the quake struck, Rides in Disneyland had to be suspended for a while, and power lines went down on Mexicali. Some sources report about 19 aftershocks already. Some buildings also suffered some damage, and water lines were reported to be leaking.
