Mermaid Parade To Paint Coney Island With Colors

mermaid-paradeJune 19, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade is an event of fun, colors, happiness; a day of sand and sea creatures, colorful costumes. New York City on June 19, will see people in their best possible costumes of sea creatures on the street.

This Mermaid Parade was founded by Dick Zigun who was also the founder of Coney Island USA which is a non-profit arts group. In the Mermaid Parade, participants dress in handmade costumes of mermaid, Neptune or various sea creatures and walk the streets. This year on the 28th Annual Mermaid Parade will start at 2 pm featuring Lou Reed as King Neptune and Laurie Anderson as Queen Mermaid.

The participants after assembling at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue which is past the Judge’s Review stand at West 12th Street will go to West 10th Street to the Boardwalk where the parade will continue West on the Boardwalk itself to the dismissal point at Stillwell Avenue. Around 5:30 pm the parade will be concluded with a Ribbon Cutting Pageant on the beach south of West 10th Street. After that there will be The Mermaid Parade official after party at the New York Aquarium’s Oceanic Deck at West 8th Street like every year.

The Mermaid Parade is close to the heart of the Coney Island people and it is regarded as America’s largest art parade. This event teaches mythology to Brooklyn families, it is an artistic expansion of self expression for the New York City residents and it provides honor to Coney Island.

This grand and magnificent display of sea colors is expected to attract lot of viewers this year in spite of Boardwalk being under construction.
