Men-only Turkish baths banned
December 12th, 2011 - 9:38 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattHarrogate, Dec 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Officials in Harrogate have admitted that they are covering up details of what they mean by “inappropriate behavior” to protect the image of the town.
The council recently announced the ban of men-only Turkish baths which has been a common practice at the spa since it was opened in 1897. Officials explain that the decision became necessary after receiving complaints of “inappropriate behavior.” The town says the ban will come into force next January. Financial struggle has also been cited as a reason for the ban.
Cabinet member for culture, Coun Caroline Bayliss told reporters that, “It was the two items taken together. I can defend my decision entirely on commercial grounds and I would far prefer to do so than sully the reputation of Harrogate. We have unfortunately had complaints from other male users of the Turkish Baths.”
Bayliss revealed that she only got to know about the problem when she entered office. She subsequently ordered a review and it came out that most of the negative comments that she heard were true. She said she ordered the ban because protecting the image of the town was the priority.
The Turkish bath in Harrogate is one of the only seven Victorian baths that are currently available in the United Kingdom.
