Men Grow Mustaches for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
November 2nd, 2010 - 9:37 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonNov 2 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Movember Foundation was created by the Cancer Society of New Zealand Mental Health Foundation. November has been named “Prostate Cancer Awareness Month” and just as the ladies paint the town pink and such, the men have their own way of bringing notice. Their are growing their mustaches out during the entire month of November, thus the name “Movember”.
The Movember Foundation determines the non shaving rules for the men who wish to participate. They can choose to do so either alone or in teams, but basically, you shave your face on November first, and the put the razor away for a month. Trimming is allowed, however.
The campaign raises money for all sorts of men’s health issues, not just for prostate cancer. Jim Slattery, the spokesman for the Foundation stated, “Over 2,500 Kiwi men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and one in 10 men will experience depression in their lifetime. Movember’s campaign focuses not only on raising funds but to get men thinking and talking about their health and making it a priority”.
In the last 4 years, they have managed to raise over four million dollars for men’s health issues and illnesses. For those who wish to participate, feel free to go to movember.co.nz.
