Mayor Peter Cammarano And Other Big Names Arrested
July 24th, 2009 - 6:45 pm ICT by GD
This is big news and has been brewing for quite sometime; it even required the federal authorities some time (almost 2 years) to unwind the whole plot and proceed with the arrests. In what seems to be the biggest corruption scandal to have hit New Jersey, almost 44 people hailing from various sections of society have been handcuffed by the legal authorities; some of the names in the arrested list being of very affluent people. One such name is that of Peter Cammarano III who is the Mayor of Hoboken.
The mayor had just celebrated his 32nd birthday the previous day, to the day of his arrest. The charges that he has been indicted with are for being a part of the money laundering racket involving bribery and corruption that had mushroomed in the New York area as well as in Israel.
Two other northern New Jersey mayors, two members of the New Jersey Legislature, a lot of local officials and a man from Brooklyn are also accused of the same charges. Even the names of five rabbis are included in the list of the people taken in by the FBI.
According to the latest reports, Mayor Cammarano plans to plead innocent to all the charges pending against him in the court of law. A part of the complaint reads like this, “..knowingly and willfully conspire to obstruct, delay, and affect interstate commerce by extortion under color of official right, by accepting and agreeing to accept corrupt payments that were paid and to be paid by another, with that person’s consent, in exchange for defendant Peter Cammarano III’s future official assistance in Hoboken Government matters.”
