New York, Jan 29, (THAINDIAN NEWS) In the wake of the growing opposition to hold the trials of the 9/11 terror suspects in Manhattan, the White House has asked the Justice Department to look for other sites to hold the trials, sources claim. The move comes following New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s emphasis on holding the trails out of Lower Manhattan.
On Wednesday, the New York Mayor told reporters that the trials for the terror suspects should be held in a more secure location rather than holding it in downtown Manhattan which could cause a lot of inconvenience for the people living in the neighborhood. At the same time, Mayor Michael Bloomberg also reiterated that the trials would cost a whopping $1 billion if it is held in Manhattan and so the federal government should take initiatives to find an alternative site that would cost less. Moreover, Mayor Michael Bloomberg also implied that a less expensive as well as a less disruptive venue should be chosen for the trials.
The plan to have the self proclaimed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspects stand trial in New York was made public by President Barack Obama in the month of November last year. At that point of time, even Mayor Michael Bloomberg had supported the decision to hold the trials about a quarter-mile away from the World Trade Center site.
The decision had drawn objection from a number of New York officials who want relocation of the venue of the trial. Moreover, a joint letter has been issued to Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to shift the trial site.
