June 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Maximo Altez Navarro has announced his resignation in defending Joran van der Sloot. Navarro was the Peruvian attorney for Joran van der Sloot-the suspect in the Natalie Holloway case-who confessed to the murder of Stephany Flores in Peru.
In a statement which Navarro made to CNN, he shared that he no longer wished to be Joran van der Sloot’s attorney, and added, “This has created many problems for me.” According to authorities in Peru, the attorney was the only person who ever visited Joran van der Sloot in prison.
Van der Sloot, a 22 year old Dutch native confessed to the murder of Stephany Flores, a 21 year old business student, in Peru last month. He was awaiting a psychological evaluation in the Miguel Castro prison in Lima Peru, according to authorities. He has a 24 hour guard.
Joran has no contact with any of the general prison population, and is held in a high security section of the prison which has only 2 inmates in the entire area. The only other inmate in this section is the alleged Colombian hit man, Hugo, Trujillo Ospina. It is reported that the two have spent time together, where there is a television, and weights which were constructed from broomsticks and drink bottles.
Van der Sloot confessed to elbowing Flores in the face, and then suffocating and strangling her with his shirt. He was furious because she had read an email on his laptop about the Holloway case.
“At that moment impulsively, with my right elbow I hit her in the face exactly on top of the nose,” Joran said. “I think she started to faint. It affected me so that I grabbed her from the neck and strangled her for a minute.”
“There was blood everywhere,” he went on to tell. “What am I going to do now. I had blood on my shirt. There was also blood on the bed, so, I took my shirt and put it on her face, pressing hard, until I killed Stephany.”
Before quitting, Joran’s lawyer had planned to file a motion asking the judge in the case to throw the entire confession out, since he claimed it was acquired illegally, while Joran did not have proper representation. The police maintain that the confession was acquired properly and should not be dismissed.
