New Jersey, Oct 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The World War II veteran, Howard Unruh, best known as the mass murderer of 13 people in a shooting rampage in Camden, New Jersey died on Monday. His death occurred in a New Jersey prison hospital.
After returning from the World War II, Unruh became paranoid about his neighbors and friends and started to pen a diary with all that he thought was said about him or even against him. On September 6th in the early morning, he arrived home from a movie theater and he discovered that the gate he had just built in front of his house had been stolen. This appears to have been the triggering factor of the rampage.
Unruh later told the police, “When I came home last night and found my gate had been stolen, I decided to kill them all.” Then he slept till 8:00 a.m. then dressed up in his best clothes and had breakfast with his mother.
Then at 9:20 a.m., Howard Unruh left the house armed with a German Luger pistol and started the brutal rampage. He had his gun, and all the extra ammunition that he had and started shooting indiscriminately. He kept on shooting till he ran out of ammunition.
He killed 13 people in just 10 minutes on September 6, 1949. In the mass murders there were five men, five women, and three kids too. Around 16 people were also injured in this firing spree. More lives would have been lost had he not run out of ammunition. The whole massacre happened within 10 minutes but its brutality resonates even today.
Howard was a gay and thought that the people mocked him for his different sexual orientation. This could have been one of the reasons behind the violent and the brutal rampage. The court held Howard Unruh guilty of all the murders and he was caught from his apartment but he was sent to a psychiatric facility for schizophrenic behavior. He never went to trial for his crime.
